The Lonely Winter Tree

It can be handled in any number of ways, but the lonely tree motif makes for an eye pleasing composition…doubly so in winter and surrounded or covered in snow.

Finding the tree shouldn’t be too hard. You might even have a nice one in the backyard, down the road, on your favorite hike, a nearby park, an otherwise empty field. How to handle the shoot? Go wide on it to emphasize the starkness, or zoom in for a cropped shot as above. Composition is simple, off center for best results, though some situations might scream symmetry and a centered shot might be better.

The possibilites for processing the “lonely tree” motif are endless, but if one type of photo is begging for a crisp black and white conversion, the “lonely tree” is definitely the one. The black and white conversion easily compensates for poor weather outside or the ever present gray sky. If your lucky enough to have a blue sky, by all means keep it in color, a winter tree on deep blue sky is a striking combination. Other things to try: hdr conversion, tinted black and white, or getting creative with color and cooling the photo down.

I’ve grabbed a few examples for ideas, the rest is up to you.
