Thom has reviewed the Nikon D700, giving it a total going over, with comparisons and recommendations of the D700 siblings, the D3 and the D300. The usual suspects are all there, excellent build quality, exellent resolution, superb noise management, and dynamic range to boot…

Doubts as to whether the 15 megapixels tightly packed on the Canon EOS 50D’s APS-C sensor might contribute to noise problems, especially at higher ISO, should be somewhat eased, based on these impressive image samples.

via Rockwell…
I missed this earlier this week, but this shot is a powerful demonstration of the ISO performance of the D3 and D700.
as Rockwell says:
…The noise isn’t much worse, but what is much worse is that the details are smeared over by the strong noise reduction. Look at the fur. It looks fine in the [...]

For those of you like me who should be buying a D300, but are considering purchasing the D700, this comparison by Rockwell should help to strengthen your resolve.
I point it out because unlike a lot of test shots, this one is a little more real world. Of course the caveat is that ISO is set [...]

If you’ve been trying to convince yourself that full frame isn’t that big of a deal, well you’ve been lying to yourself. As I said before, that bigger sensor makes a difference and most of that is evident in a little something called “image quality” (imporant to quite a few photograhers I hear). Full frame [...]

Honesty, what’s not to like?
For all practical purposes the D700 is a D3, but smaller (good!), cheaper (good!), and incapable of recording audio (who cares?). Yes there are some other differences, but real pros excluded, most could live without a few FPS, the integrated vertical grip, and battery differences. What the vast majority will be [...]

At bythom.com, Thom gives his opinion on Nikon’s ad campaign for the Nikon D3 aimed at the pro crowd, which seeks to promote the ability of the D3 to nab the shot no other camera could take. While I mostly agree, and would love for Nikon to really, really push for more pros, the best [...]

A great little mini- shootout between the two flagships with examples to boot! The ISO performance of both cameras is just stunning. While I think one should take the “results” with a grain of salt, can you go wrong with either camera? Of interest to me, and probably quite a few others [...]

I keep checking real world testing of the D3 and the D300 to see if they are living up to the hype I’ve created for them in my own head, and it appears that they do. Anyway Rockwell continues his hands on with both of these cameras, and the news is encouraging for folks [...]
