Sony A850 Review at Photo Review
I’m a big fan of the idea of more consumers getting access to DSLR cameras with full frame sensors, and that’s exactly what Sony has offered with the Sony A850. It’s tempting to think of it as A900 lite, but honestly it isn’t really skimping on anything, it’s just a real good deal. In a review at Photoreview.com.au, the A850 pulls in lab numbers similar to the A900, and nabs an overall score of 8.5 out of 10, but I did notice this detail I hadn’t caught elsewhere:
We may never have discovered it unless Sony’s PR company had included a very attractive-looking DT 50mm f/1.8 SAM lens with the review camera. Trying to frame our Imatest test shots with this lens – and ending up with cropped images – sent us to the user manual for further information.

The culprit, the A850 automatically crops images taken with a DT lens. The problem lies in a lack of viewfinder indications for where that crop occurs. I’m finding that a bit surprising, but not a deal breaker by any means. I mean, $2000 for 24 megapixels and pro-level body with in-camera image stabilization isn’t too bad.

Howdy folks down under!
I’m the new News Editor at Photocrati and wanted to let you know that we have the first full field test review in from acclaimed photographer Peter Burian on the Sony A850 DSLR. He put the camera through its paces and came away with a pretty positive outlook. There were a few small things he felt detracted from such an affordable full frame offering from Sony.
If you’d like to take a look at Peter’s review: http://www.photocrati.com/sony-alpha-a850-digital-slr-review-field-test-report/
Thanks for your time,
