Sony A550 and A500 Reviewed at Photocrati

The Sony A500 and Sony A550 round out (by my count) 5 DSLR cameras that are priced under the $1000 mark. The A500 and A550 are at the top of that grouping that also includes the A230, A330, and A380. Both opt out of the HD video trend so prevalent right now, but otherwise offer pretty good value, with flip out LCDs, in-camera image stabilization, and a Live View system that actually works! In particular the A550’s flip out LCD checks in at an eye-pleasing 921,600 dot resolution and the ability to shoot at 7 fps. Both cameras also feature in-camera high dynamic range, combining two captures into one image.

In one of the first reviews I’ve seen for either camera, Photocrati.com’s Peter Burian has mostly kind words for these two Sony offerings. On the Steady-Shot:

The in-camera Steady Shot stabilizer was very effective. In low light, I consistently got sharp photos at 50mm (75mm equivalent) using a shutter speed of 1/15 sec. At a longer 1/8 sec., at least half my photos of New York night scenes were sharp. When bracing the camera against some solid object, I was able to make some technically good images even at 1/4 sec.
