Adobe Releases Lightroom 2.4 and Camera Raw 5.4 Sigma DP2: That’s One Sharp Lens

Sigma DP2: Lightroom vs. Sigma Photo Pro

With the latest update to Adobe Lightroom (2.4) you can now use Lightroom as your first step in the Sigma DP2 workflow, and sidestep the use of Sigma Photo Pro alltogether if you choose to. But, is this a wise decision? “I’m not sure”, and “it depends” seem to be my current answers. At their defaults, the 2 programs create noticably different looking images, and if you asked me which one is the real deal, I’d say that SPP is providing more of that DP2 look, but its hard to find the words to define just what that look is. Regardless, a couple of shots demonstrating the differences, both unedited and presented as opened in the respective programs.

  1. Can you try to adjust the lightroom versions to make them look closer to the Photo Pro versions.

The first one looks like the highlights are blown out, and needs some recovery, maybe decrease exposure.

Both photos to me just need increased saturation and clarity.

Is it that Pro Photo is doing some auto adjustments, because it expects a lot of users to be in the ‘point and shoot’ group.

If I could Pro Photo isn’t doing anything particularly clever, I would just use LR, to reduce the step in the work flow.

  2. anindha,
Both programs seem to be doing something behind the scenes, but it’s pretty clear to me that Photo Pro is more in tune with the DP2, and 99% of the time I just start there. The only issue I have is related to WB, where it’s more cumbersome to tweak in Photo Pro. That said for general use Lightroom is fine, but this doesn’t turn out to be a “general use” camera…You’ll want to spend time with these files.
