Samsung NX Series a Game-Changer?
That may be the way PopPhoto sees it, but will this really push Samsung past where their DSLR models haven’t. I still have trouble believing it, but apparently some camera manufacturers think that small DSLR-like cameras are the future, and apparently the only thing holding Samsung back in interchangeable lens camera sales is that apparently their current crop of DSLR cameras are just a litte bit too big.
Just to catch up a bit, earlier this week Samsung announced a competing format to the Olympus/Panasonic micro-four-thirds, a format that like micro-four-thirds achieves smaller camera body size by ditching the mirror box and prism found in the typical DSLR and by using an EVF instead. In Samsung’s case, the sensor they’ll be using is APS-C size so theoretically there’s a potential for improvent in IQ over the 4/3 sensor used with micro-four-thirds (see our Making Sense of Sensor Scale for some perspective on the differences). Additionally, and perhaps annoyingly, Samsung won’t be using the “K-mount” they share with Pentax, instead they’ll have a new mount which means new lenses, and more confusion.
So yeah, I’m not all together convinced about these kind of small DSLR-like cameras, but you know who is? Samsung, and big time:
“The NX will be the apex of all our capabilities,” said Seung Soo Park, Vice President, Strategic Market Team, Samsung Digital Imaging Co. “We decided to weave everything together.”
Precisely what “everything” is, Park wouldn’t say, except that it will be the best of the company’s LCD, processor, and lens technology. Considering Samsung’s dominance in categories ranging from LCD televisions to cell phones, that’s an impressive amount of technical horsepower.
So maybe I’m just short sighted or maybe the Panasonic G1 is selling like gangbusters. Either way, Samsung is going all in on NX.

I had a look at the Panasonic G1 @ photokina last year and it didn’t leave a great impression on me – mostly because of the viewfinder. Don’t think this will be much better with the NX series, it just lacks the real SLR feeling.
I would be inclined to agree, though as far as EVF’s go, the G1 ’s isn’t bad. Still it wouldn’t replace my dslr. In a compact, that’s a different story.
These are advertised as “DSLR replacements” or even “new generation of DSLRs” but in my opinion they’re just excellent bridge cameras.
I feel the same way, I hope it isn’t my snobbery breaking through.
