Canon EOS Rebel T1I (500D) Review at Photography Bay: “The Best Rebel Yet” Ricoh CX1 Firmware Update: Version 1.24

Ricoh CX1 Review at Trusted Reviews: “Impossible Not To Be Impressed”

Seeking to conquer the challenge of improving dynamic range in a compact camera, the 9.29 megapixel, 7x zoom Ricoh CX1 gets reviewed at Trusted Reviews, where they were clearly impressed with the image quality:

The lens takes some of the credit, producing excellent corner-to-corner sharpness, with no distortion at any focal length and only a tiny hint of chromatic aberration in the corners of the frame at wide angle, but it is the sensor and image processor that deserve the accolades. The overall level of detail is superb, and colour rendition is pretty much perfect. The expanded dynamic range feature works extremely well, producing good shadow and highlight detail even in difficult high-contrast shots.

This is a camera I’ve been quite curious about as well, and reviews like this really don’t really quell that curiosity.

  1. Sorry to be the resident curmudgeon but look at page 5 of the review. ISO 400 (of which the review mildly says, “There are signs of noise reduction at 400 ISO, with some loss of fine detail”) looks like a WATERCOLOUR! Compared to your other recent infatuations – the DP2 and EP-1 – this looks like garbage.

    • Resident curmudgeon is right. But seriously, I’d never think to go ISO 400 on a regular basis on a compact camera, hence my interest in the DP2 and E-P1. (Keeping in mind I own a 5D Mark II, so I have keen interest in ISO performance in general)

  2. Funny, I’d never heard of this camera.

I *so* wish f***ing Nikon/Canon would get on the in-body stabilization wagon, so we could *really* exploit those superfast primes they have. (I have Canon’s 85mm 1.2. Man, what a lens!

    • It does stink with regards to the inbody IS. Ok I accept that it may work better on the lens, but they have so many lenses minus IS. Put the IS on the camera, let us turn it off for pro lenses with better IS on the lens if that’s the case. Meanwhile they throw it on every compact, so it’s an effective technology just sitting on the shelves (when it comes to DSLRs)
