Pictures and Specifications of the Canon EOS 7D

Well, here it is, one step closer to being official. The Canon EOS 7D making another appearance, as in leaked, in of course a Chinese forum. Not only do we get a decidedly good look at the camera (and 3 new lenses, an EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, and an EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, and an EF 100mm f/2.8 L IS USM Macro), but we also have the specification rundown. Since I’m assuming we don’t all speak Chinese, the highlights include:

  • 18 megapixels APS-C CMOS Sensor
  • Dual DiG!C 4 imaging processors, 14-bit A/D signal conversion
  • 8 FPS (94 Large/Fine JPEGS or 15 RAW)
  • 19 points cross type AF sensors. Eight-directional double cross central AF point
  • ISO 100-6400, extends to 12800
  • 100% coverage, 1.0x optical viewfinder with intelligent display, with electronic horizon line.
  • 3.0″ LCD, 920,000 dot resolution, 160 degree viewing angle
  • New iFCL meter system using high contrast and color detection (63-zone)
  • Newly-designed streamlined body, metallic shutter sound, shutter lifespan approx. 150,000 times
  • HD movie, HDMI out, external mic input
  • EOS Integrated Dust Removal system
  • Live view with Face-priority AF
  • Auto Lighting Optimizer
  • Auto correction of lens peripheral illumination (vignetting)
  • New switch for Live View/Video mode
  • New 24mm wide-angle built-in flash supporting EOS E-TTL II

As a reader points out, there is also additional clarity sensor size, it looks like the Canon EOS 7D will be based on an APS-C (1.6x crop) CMOS sensor. The marketing approach so far appears to rely on the higher resolution and speed of the 7D over the D300s. I can only hope that Canon has made some advances with their sensor technology to justify putting 18 megapixels on an APS-C sensor. We shall see.

  1. Excellent translation, an alternate version in my blog:

  2. The product photos show an EF-S lens on the 7D, so assuming the photos are the real thing, then this would mean a 1.6x cropped sensor.

  3. Hmm… at the chinese poster it actually says APS-C, and I don’t even need to understand chinese to understand it :)

  4. I don’t understand why Canon would make this another crop body. They should have put out a sub $2000 full frame camera. It would have been a goldmine.

  5. Yep, because we all know its all about the megapixels. I still dont think Nikon has all that much to worry about after how Canon screwed the pooch with the 50d.

  6. oh no full frame

  7. An entry-level 18mp FF 7D would make more sense, to be at the sweet spot; but 18mp for aps-c seems way too much, since it will outresolve any lens with no extra advantage but noise problems. 15mp 50D was enough.

    • Nikonian,
Yes, as I recall the 50D was already out resolving some lesser glass, they type of glass that might be offered in a kit perhaps?

    • I agree in regards to the 18mp. I thought the race to out do each other when it comes to mp was over. Based on early rumors, and some issues with the 50D, I was expecting Canon to down size the up and concentrate on ISO and HD Video. This should be interesting, but I agree that 18mp for a APS-C is too much. Prosumer photographers will not pay the price for an L-series lens, which would out price the camera body, in order to get the most out of the 18mp.

      • I was also hoping for a different path, it seems they’re content for now to add resolution while struggle to keep noise in check, rather than lower megapixels, and really improve ISO by a stop or two. They have addressed the video though!

  8. Is it still using the moronic Apple QT .mov file with all the issues of crushed blacks and crappy playback on most computers.
Why is Canon pandering to the Mac airheads?

    • skeptical,
yes, I think they use it for compression quality and file sizes, but it is a pain to edit for sure.

    • As a Mac Airhead, I feel I must respond.

H.264 is at the moment the most efficient form of compression for Canon’s purpose. I am not so sure it’s pandering to ‘Mac Airheads’ as it is using the best codec for the job given the write speed of the cards.

The crushed blacks also have nothing to do with the codec. If you don’t like your blacks black, do something about it in camera! The options are there, custom curves, the whole bit. . .it has nothing to do with the codec.

If you did a bit more research, I’m sure you would be able to pull the latitude you want out of h.264.

      Good luck!

      • Christian,
Not questioning the compression at all, but you’ll admit the processing is more of a pain, or at least more hardware intensive.

        • Absolutely. H.264 is a dog of a codec to play back, even on a nicely spec’d system.

In an ideal world, it would give us a choice to drop it straight into any one of many codecs straight off the bat, XDCAM HD, DVCPROHD, ProRes, DNXhD etc. . .

But that ‘aint happening anytime soon, so for now I’ll suck it up and transode to Pro Res. :)

          • Yeah, switching to pro res seems to be the workflow of choice, but I think that’s the process where folks worry about the black/color issues?

  9. I am loving the improvements on the video aspect. Maybe it is indeed time to upgrade soon from the retiring 450D.

  10. Thanks for the info on the spec. I have just foud a great price for pre -ordering the eos-7d on a Uk site called Just Canon – http://www.justcanon.com/acatalog/Canon_Digital_SLR_Cameras_-EF_Range.html

  11. New products are always more advanced than older ones. The good thing is that all recent cameras are able to satisfy 99% of your shooting needs. Instead I would concentrate on taking the most out of my camera and lenses.

About the integrated Speedlight wireless transmitter that is the most important upgrade in 7D, 5D users will have to use the external transmitter or the Speedlight 430EX/580EX to command other flashes.

No reason to talk about video since these are cameras and video is only a gadget.

can these lenses fit on a 5D,presume same battery system. think its more megapixels to accoomodate video. and to do what other companies are doing. ttl 2 everything is evolving so fast. some good points but not aimed at the top pros. will spend more time on computer editing noise values could be problematic

  13. Wow! Dual Digic 4 imaging processors, HD Video and 3 inch Display is nice.

  14. So for an amateur defecting from Sony Alpha to Canon, and who wants both still and video options in a camera – would you suggest going with the 7D or 5D MkII? Or would one consider the Nikon D300s?

  15. Oh yeah, and another question, the reason I stumbled across this site in the first place – does the 7D have a built-in mono-aural mic like the 5D MkII? I can’t find the answer anywhere, so went looking for close up photos to see if I could find any holes under the badge.

  16. It does have built in mono Dom, and if you’re interest is biased for video, I’m thinking the Canon route may be better than Nikon. 7D or 5D2 depends on your need full frame? That said I should be getting a D300s soon to review, so stay tuned.

  17. 7D seems like it is packed with more features than the 5D MKii. now i am having a hard time choosing which one to buy.

  18. Does anyone know the release date for the canon 7d? I have pre-ordered it but the wait is killing me….I can’t wait to have it in my hand.

I can’t find anything online regarding a release date.
