Photographers McNally, Peterson Review Nikon D3x: Monster of a Camera

A couple of well know photographers have chimed in with their thoughts on the Nikon flagship, the 24 megapixel D3x.

First we have Moose Peterson who spent some time in Yellowstone with the D3x and came away quite impressed:

Anyone who says the D3x is overpriced, well,  they just doesn’t get it. This is a camera that produces quality revealing at the very least $20k medium format backs that can’t accept the biggest and grandest arsenal of lenses medium format can only dream of.

-Moose Peterson

So yes, I’d say he’s keeping the D3x.

Meanwhile over at photograher Joe McNally’s blog, McNally was suitably impressed with the IQ of the files coming from a Nikon D3x photoshoot:

That didn’t happen to me. Though I have to admit, when a D3X NEF finally boiled to the surface of the screen, I cocked my head, my eyes got wide and my jaw slack, just like in the movies. My standard for detail has always been Kodachrome 25, and the D3 zoomed past that pretty handily, and now this thing gives you a file that is like frikkin’ Stargate. Who knows what’s on the other side of this?

-Joe McNally

Now, McNally had to give the camera back, but it’s clear as McNally explains that a lot of photographers who’d have previously reached for medium format for a shoot, will now be able to shoot with the D3x, and I suspect many will.
