Digital Photo Pro has a little primer for those so inclined on picture noise and sharpness, including some useful tutorials.

With the advent of the latest gen cameras, a much greater awareness has been given to noise, especially in the context of ISO performance. Flagship cameras from Canon, Nikon, and even Pentax excel at high ISO photographs featuring excellent noise management, still some of the less fortunate will frequently find themselves with that series of photos taken in low light, where the photographer was forced to just crank the ISO in order to come home with anything.

My solution parallels quite nicely with the article. I skip Lightroom’s noise/sharpening mostly and like Noise Ninja quite a bit. Photoshop’s smart sharpening filter fullfills the majority of the detail work with selective use of high pass sharpening as well. In worst case scenarios—just bail on the noise removal, do the black and white conversion and use that noise to your advantage……
