Pentax X70 Review at Digital Camera Review: Worth Competitor

With nearly every camera maker seemingly having a strong contender in the super-zoom (now ultra-zoom) class, it’s pretty clear that there’s a strong demand for a relatively small camera that packs a big lens and point and shoot ease of use. In talking to my non-photographer friends, the appeal is having something smaller and easier to use than a DSLR, and not a lot of attention is paid to specifics like ISO performance or lens optics. Given that, until they start putting 24x zooms in pocket-sized cameras, the super-zoom will continue to be popular.

To the point though, Pentax has their own option in this class, named the X70. It features a 12 megapixel sensor, 2.7 inch LCD, and most importantly a 24x zoom with an equivalent range of 24-624mm! Additionally the X70 supports 720p high definition recording (crippled at 15fps unfortunately) and includes program, aperture, shutter, and manual modes of shooting in addition to the usual auto and various scene modes. In a review at Digital Camera Review, the X70 scored very well at everything (well, excluding video that is…):

This is even a great intermediary camera for the casual shooter who wants to move up to a better class of camera than a typical point-and-shoot
