Pentax 645D “Out of the Freezer”

As has been reported at several sites already today, during the Pentax presentation for the K-x, officials for Pentax did confirm that the 645D was still on target for “early 2010″. For some context this was said during a short question and answer segment towards the end of the presentation. The question was along the lines of was Pentax worried that they were pushing the Pentax brand down to just the entry level by not having a higher end model. Pentax’s Bill Zani (vice president of sales and marketing) and Ned Bunnell (president of Pentax) responded quickly with a resounding “not at all”, they had the K-7 after all, whose target audience in their opinion (and mine) is broader than the price range might indicate, and that they had bigger and better things coming, with the “30 megapixel 645D” to be released “early 2010″, adding that it was definitely “out of the freezer”. There was a tiny bit of confusion for some audience members, I suppose some forgetting that Pentax had already announced this themselves back in March.

Coincidentally, this was the same question I had intended to ask more or less, as the only issue I have with Pentax is that the line doesn’t give consumers something to aspire too, for me it’s nice to think of the system you’re in as a ladder to some better camera. While I’m excited about the 645D, I’m not exactly sure that it fulfills that goal simply because it might be too high of a rung. It seems to me that a full frame or flat out pro-spec offering is needed to round things out, and for all I know that may well be in the works. Of course none of this should be a reflection on their current offerings, both the K-x and K-7 are solid offerings with surprising value, and besides, when Bill Zani said “more exciting things are coming” I believe him.
