The Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1 is the first micro four thirds to reach consumers, and surprisingly is largely absent of typical first-gen stumbles, instead earning for itself some good reviews, even pulling in a couple of camera of the year awards. The G1’s use of micro four thirds was to bring a DSLR like camera into a smaller size without making too many compromises. At that, the G1 is quite successful, not only bringing excellent IQ to a small size, but bringing some innovation as well. In a review at Trusted Reviews, the G1 easily wins over reviewer Cliff Smith:

To conclude, I’m immensely impressed with the Panasonic G1. It’s a very accomplished little camera that succeeds brilliantly at its objective of providing a real alternative to a full-size DLSR. I have been using it over the past few weeks, taking it on some long walks across Dartmoor, and I’ve found its low weight, fast performance, excellent handling and superb image quality ideally suited to my kind of photography.

I’ve said this before, but my hope for micro four thirds isn’t smaller DSLRs, but better compacts…of course I’m still waiting to see how that turns out.
