Olympus E-620 Art Filters: Built in Creative Fun
One of the more touted aspects of the E-620, like the E-30 before it, are the inclusion of what Olympus calls “Art Filters”. Think of these as creative effects applied to your photographs in-camera with the transformed results shown momentarily after capture. On the E-620, there are 6 of these filters, some more appealing than others. Implementing them is as easy as turning the camera mode dial to the “Art/Scn” mode where you’ll be presented with the 6 included filters: pop art, soft focus, pale&light color, light tone, grainy film, and pin hole. Before trying them though, it’s important to point out two caveats. The first is the art filters are JPEG only. If you have the camera set to RAW and switch over to the “Art/Scn” mode, the E-620 will put you in a Raw/JPEG setting, and take only a JPEG for the Art Filter shot. If you’re already in JPEG, the E-620 won’t let you select RAW. So the best thing to do is go ahead and switch over to JPEG before switching to the Art/Scn mode. The second aspect is that Art Filters take a little bit of time to process, so it’s a “shoot and wait a bit” for results type situation. With all that in mind, art filters do provide some fun results and are well suited for the creative photographer.
Below I’ve provided some samples of the different looks provided by the art filters. The same scene with the same settings for each shot. Not every filter works for every shot, but you can see the potential. You can click on each shot for a larger view, or follow the original size link for an untouched and unresized view of each shot.
