Nikon To Introduce “New Concept” SLR Camera This (Financial) Year

nikon_logo2It’s a question of “when”, not “if”, when it comes to Nikon finally bringing a mirror-less type interchangeable lens camera to the market. Now, to us this has seemed inevitable for some time, but in an unusual moment of frankness for the typically hush-hush camera manufacturer, Nikon Corp President Makoto Kimura tells Bloomberg News that a “new concept” camera is planned for release in the coming fiscal year, possibly featuring…a mirror-less design and improved video functionality:

The “new concept” model will probably have an enhanced function for video recording and may adopt the so-called mirrorless structure, Kimura said in an interview today in Tokyo. “It could be any time this fiscal year or the following year, as new models are starting to sell,” he said, declining to specify when the product will be available.

Nikon, Japan’s biggest SLR camera maker, has been intensively focusing on development of the product to fuel revenue growth of digital SLR cameras, Kimura said. The company aims to boost sales of cameras with interchangeable lenses about 80 percent to 6.65 million units in three years to March 2013, Nikon said last month.

Of course the most natural place to make such an introduction would be at Photokina in September. I wonder if Canon has made similar plans?
