Nikon D90 Review: Well Balanced Attractive Package

The Nikon D90 is a compelling option on paper, with 12.3 megapixels, ISO range of 100-6400, high resolution 3 inch display, and a 720p high definition video mode. As it turn out the D90 specs translate quite well in the real world with comparisons in IQ with the Nikon D300 being pretty fair to make. In a review at the Digital Photography School, the D90 nearly wins over a Canon shooter:

The Nikon D90 packs a lot into a well balanced, attractive package.  While I have noted some quirks of the camera, I’d use one in a heartbeat if I had more Nikon lenses.  It’s a great combination building on Nikon’s excellent photo quality with the addition of High Definition video and some very well thought out photographic features.

I’ve gotten yelled at for this before, but the D90 will get you most, if not more IQ than the Nikon D300 will. At a discount. Plus a potentially fun video mode. All in a smaller size.

On the other hand the D300 is a better camera, more advanced, better build, faster, with an excellent (best?) AF system. If you don’t need the AF, speed, and build, you’ll want to consider the Nikon D90.

You can get your Nikon D90 here at Amazon or here at B and H Photo Video.

  1. I shouldn’t be surprised if you’re right about the D300.
