Nikon D700 versus Canon EOS 5D: A Full Frame Digital Camera Comparison

by admin on August 24, 2008

If you’re one of those folks getting sick of the mainstream (camera) media going on and on (and on) about how great the Nikon D700, then judging by my webstats you:

  • don’t visit this site
  • Currently own a 5D.

By now you’ve heard me go on and on about full frame sensor digital cameras, singing their praises, and yes that will continue, I’m sold on their advantages. But they currently have just one nagging disadvantage.

Cost.

Yes, the damn things cost quite a bit, putting them out of the reach of photographers with big dreams like you and I. While this is a constant source of nagging bitterness for me, and has caused me to add quite a few reviewers to my “Despise For Random Reasons” list, there are some alternatives for photographers on a budget. Well, there is one alternative.

The Canon EOS 5D

A 5D will cost you at least $500 less than a D700, brand new. A used one could save you $1000 or more.

Yes, I know it’s getting replaced very soon, and you’re right the 5D is 3 years old. But there’s a good chance the 5D is a better camera than your current one, and just looking at image quality alone, the 5D hangs with the likes of the D3 and D700. No, it doesn’t have their functionality, not by any measure, but it does bring home the bacon, I can assure you.

With that said, Pixinfo.com has an excellent comparison of the Nikon D700 and the Canon EOS 5D. Three years has allowed Nikon to make many advancements over the 5D in usability, AF, etc., but in image quality:

The two cameras provide about the same amount of details, although the EOS 5D images seem to be more detailed. This comes from the stronger in-camera sharpening. When the images are converted from RAW files, the details are basically the same.

Go and read the comparison here, but while you’re there check out those image sample comparisons. Yes, the D700 is an amazing camera, but the 5D has been doing that whole “amazing” thing for 3 years now.
