Nikon D700 Review at Photography Bay

Eric at Photography Bay reviews the winner of our full frame camera poll, the Nikon D700. We could spent a lot of time singing its praises here, and in many respects the Nikon D700 is one of the best deals going in the camera world, but instead we’ll let Photography Bay handle the praising:

Simply put, the Nikon D700 handles like a charm.  For the money, nothing comes close in terms of the responsiveness.  I’ve had a Canon 5D Mark II since early December.  While I love the image quality, ergonomics and ISO performance of the 5D Mark II, I have to admit that the Nikon D700 is much more responsive, particularly in terms of autofocus capabilities.

I’ll just add that as Eric says in his conclusions, if you’re buried in Nikon lenses, this is the camera to get. It was easier for me to pass because I only had a few lenses, and one in particular (18-200 VR) wouldn’t have helped me with the D700 anyway. Yes, I’m starting over, but I would have done so anyway with the D700. Still, I look at the picture above, and wonder what could have been…. And then I get an email that my 5D2 is shipping and snap right out of it.

   haha i’ve been having the same dilemma, those reoccurring nags that make you wonder if you made the right choice. For instance not a moment ago i sold my 28-105 nikkor with macro to a guy with his new d700 and he was playing around in the parking garage of my building for a sec, and wow the glory! that camera makes ugly look pretty. Though i didn’t express my distress to him he consoled me, when i commented on the beauty of the photos and the film like quality of the d700 he said something along the lines of “well that 5d2 may not have the focus points but it more than stand up to this camera in picture quality” him being a old 5d user biasing his statement somewhat.

   Nice story…I’m sure that deep down inside he’s more than just curious over what your 5D2 will be capable of, I mean we’re all looking over shoulder ….aren’t we?
