Nikon D700 Review

It’s hard to not be impressed with the D700. Since its release it has garnered nothing but excellent reviews, typically focusing on its incredible resolving power and ISO performance relative to its cost. And while yes, I am a Nikon fanboy, I’m relieved that Nikon has managed to string togeather a series of incredible products with overwhelming critical praise (D3, D300, and now D700).

Continuing on that note, Cameralabs has their review up of the Nikon D700, and yes its good, and yes they’re very impressed but you can’t help but notice the quote at the end:

So with the D700 Nikon further broadens its impressive DSLR line-up and continues to throw down gauntlet after gauntlet to Canon, making its arch rival look complacent in some categories. Canon simply has to respond, but until then there’s few independent observers who wouldn’t consider Nikon now having number one billing in DSLRs.

I would say based on the reading I do (internet/camera mags), that sounds about rights. It’s important to note one generation ago this wasn’t true and the Canon confidence was sky high. Now I’d say the mood for some in the Canon forums and elsewhere is best described as apprehensive. Not everbody is feeling confident about what might happen with the 5d replacement and there’s some confusion as to the route Canon might take, perhaps a cheaper full frame and more expensive full frame…but to me it seems like Canon has had plenty of time to develop a successor (3 years) and ignoring megapixels, if they compete with the D700 in resolving power and noise performance and come in with a lower price (with no AF issues), then they’re going to have a big hit. I’m just curious if they continue to sit on their heels, or they push back hard. We’ll see on the 26th.
