Nikon D5000 Review at PhotoReview
The 12.3 megapixel newcomer to the Nikon family, the D5000 has gotten its first real bit of comprehensive analysis (also known as a “review”) at Australian based PhotoReview. Unsurprisingly in terms of performance and image quality, it performs quite like the Nikon D90, which is of course, a good thing. Overall, PhotoReview seemed pleased with the D5000, and though they never seem to really give a written verdict in their reviews, the D5000 does walk away with an 8.5 (out of 10).
It just reminds me that working on a budget these days, or being a beginner, does not mean you have to settle for a sub-par camera. Just about all the cameras now at the entry-level are really good cameras, full featured, and capable of taking great pictures, and the Nikon D5000 certainly fits that bill.

Indeed, unless you need super-fast performance or really huge prints, entry level DSLRs can be regarded as professional cameras these days, and many use them as such.
A photographer from my web site has twice elicited comments about the superior image quality, and those pics were from a Nikon D70 with a kit lens!
Even still, you’re able to pull bigger and bigger prints, with faster performance than pros might have been using just a few years ago. It’s amazing what they offer budget minded consumers….
Yeah, my friend professional photog Laurie had a Nikon D1. When I got the D100 at a fourth of the price and twice the resolution (6MP), it beat the pants off the D1, he got so depressed.
