Nikon D5000 In Depth Review

Verdict

The Nikon D5000 successfully fills the needs of both enthusiast photographers moving up from previous models or looking for an affordable DSLR camera, while at the same time being a more than adequate offering for consumers stepping into their first DSLR camera. At this price point there are several competent cameras to choose from, but the D5000 offers 3 compelling aspects: a fast continuous shooting speed, a flip out LCD, and the ability to shoot HD video. Weighing the pros and cons, the D5000 has very little going against it.

Positives

  • Flip out LCD adds to creative possibilities, and enhances video experience.
  • 4 fps continuous shooting speed.
  • Slick user interface.
  • Offers enough customization to please enthusiasts.
  • Beginner friendly without being overly obvious.
  • Some of the best ergonomics in this class.
  • Responsive AF, even in low light situations.
  • Plenty of in-camera editing options.
  • 720p HD movies and HDMI out.
  • Very good ISO performance for an entry level DSLR.
  • Dedicated Live View button.
  • Programmable function button.

Negatives

  • No auto focus motor.
  • 230K LCD. Though this one is better than the specs might indicate, more is always nice.
  • Lack of dedicated buttons means relying on Information Display to change key camera settings.
  • 18-55mm VR Kit lens has cumbersome manual focus.
  • Live View performance too slow to be practical.
  • HD video has mono sound only.
  • Default image output on the soft side.

Conclusion

Each time I get an entry level DSLR to review I can’t help but to think that I wish my first DSLR had been this good, and that’s certainly the case with the D5000. I really like the user friendly interface of the D5000, which will provide ample, but subtle guidance for newcomers, and stay out of the way of enthusiasts. The flip down LCD was a pleasant surprise, and is a feature I’d love to see on more cameras. On a camera that lacks the additional top side LCD (like the D90), a flipped out LCD makes for a nice alternative indeed. The D5000 offers creative types a lot to play with too, with HD movies and plenty of in-camera editing options before and after capture.

It always seems like nitpicking to critique the compromises that are inevitable at this price point, but I suspect that some enthusiasts are going to grumble at changing white balance and ISO settings through the Info Display (after several button presses no less) and Live View remains a disappointment, but so it has been with most DSLRs. In the end though, the D5000 makes photography (dare I say it) fun, not to mention easy, while at the same time offering solid performance. So, for any consumer looking to get their first DSLR camera, or for the photographer shopping on a budget, I highly recommend the Nikon D5000.
