Nikon D3x vs. Leica M9 vs. Canon EOS 5D Mark II

The inimitable Ken Rockwell has come through with one of his trademark comparisons. Pitting the Leica M9 against the Nikon D3x and the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. The challenge? Well, it’s a resolution battle, and clearly the winner is? Well, it depends, but clearly the M9 and of course Leica glass, make for excellent results. Rockwell’s conclusions? Get a Leica M9, none of this matters, APS-C is mush, and 6 megapixels is all you need. Don’t try to make sense of it, just enjoy the ride…here.

  1. Now all of a sudden, APS sized sensors produce mush. BULLSH*T. I shoot with my Nikon d300 and pro glass — Nikon 17-55 F2.8 among others and easily make 30″ x 20″ enlargements! Why would I put out 6,995.00 for a camera?! Especially one as limiting as the Leica?! Because of the Leica enthusiasts, to become part of a leica cult, so I can sip sherry at the club – instead of being out making images…I don’t know. Heck, I’m balking at putting out $2600 for a Nikon D700 full frame! And, I can AFFORD ANYTHING I WANT and pay CASH for it.
On another FYI note I’ve made the gorgeous 30″ x 20″ enlargements from my (still used) Fuji Finepix S2 Pro which was a 6.1 megapixel camera. The images from the Fuji were so colorful, and tack sharp the framing place it took the print for the matting thought it was a poster I purchased! All these reviews though somewhat informative are ridiculous. Ken Rockwell, who self-proclaims that the camera doesn’t matter is wetting himself over this Leica! How ridiculous is this! Enough already. Personally I don’t fall for the hype, but many newbies may and I feel we, as photographers do each other, and those entering the market a great disservice.
Who was it that said that photogaphy websites and mags are 20% photography and 80% equipment catalogs?? How apropo…

  2. I used to like Rockwell but once I grew far enough in photography I tend to write him off when it comes to anything related to body “resolution” or “detail”. The fact is, he shoots in JPG pretty much exclusively. That alone make his comparisons muddy at best. Certainly none of the JPGs are truly representative of what these bodies can do.
