Daily Briefing: Nikon D3s, Sony A550, Canon 1D Mark IV, and More.

I hope everybody enjoyed their holiday, and more importantly…got all the photography gear they were wishing for. I’m still waiting to get some things with my “Christmas Money”. On that list, the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS, some strobist gear, and maybe a new printer. On the lens, I think I’ve nailed down a good deal on one, and yes I’m aware there could be a new one quite soon, but it’ll likely be much more expensive, and besides the current rendition is already incredible. As to the strobist gear, I want to explore this, have to explore it actually for some upcoming work, and I want to share what I learn on the site. Maybe we can do some learning together…

Lots of reviews around the web since the 25th:

First up, check out our first look at the Nikon D3s, with comparisons to the Canon EOS 5D Mark II right here at Neutralday.com. I still love the 5D2, but what I previously thought were pretty clean files, look quite a bit less clean when compared to the Nikon D3s. Hard to find real negatives to the D3s, it just performs. Period.

The 14.2 megapixel Sony A550 gets reviewed at Cameralabs.com where it once again gets dinged for lacking DOF preview and HD movies. Outside that, a solid, fast, offering.

Photographer Jens Dresling provides some real life analysis on the Canon EOS 1D Mark IV, another camera that I’d love to have a chance to test. Dresling’s post google translated here.

Steve Huff has a review up of the Olympus E-P2. We’re in the process of reviewing the E-P1 right now, and honestly I really enjoyed using it. Image quality is quite good and the excellent manual focus more than makes up for the somewhat slow AF (not as bad as some folks say). Also it’s starting to look pretty affordable? Check out the low price at B&H Photo.

Photographer Bill Caulfeild-Browne revisits his thoughts on the Sony A900, one year later, at Luminous Landscape. The long and short of it? He still loves it.

Photocrati.com’s Peter Burian reviews the Canon PowerShot G11. I’m waiting for a good moment to post our review, I liked it, but prefer the PowerShot S90’s size. Still a lot easier to use the G11 out in the field, and that build does have some advantages.

Digitalcamerareview.com takes a look at the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX1, an interesting camera with pretty good low light performance. Seems well suited for P&S types.

That’s it for now. Hey if you got something photo related for the holidays, please share in the comments.
