Canon PowerShot SX1 IS Reviews at DCRP and Digital Camera Review
Offering extensive controls, RAW capabilities, and full high definition 1080p video, the Canon SX1 IS is as fully featured as a digital camera could be, plus it does double duty as a video recorder. Further, with a 20x zoom the SX1 is has a focal range of an incredible 28-560mm, and a 2.8 inch flip out LCD allows for easier video shooting and getting more difficult to compose photographs. It’s not compact size, no the SX1 is a substantial camera and it also comes at substantial cost, nearly $600! This price easily puts you into DSLR territory, but many consumers still find that class intimidating and prefer the super-zoom category which offers more beginner friendly scene and auto modes, smaller form factors and a permanent lens that cover extensive ranges. So how does it all stack up? Well, 2 recent reviews help to provide further insight on the SX1, starting with Digital Camera Review’s review where comparisons with the much more affordable SX10 IS are natural:
After looking at the shots from both the SX1 and SX10 side by side, DCR editor David Rasnake noted that while we observed minor differences in performance, there wasn’t a “marked difference” between the two models in terms of noise or detail capture. “The SX1’s high-ISO shots show ever so slightly less color noise in shadow areas at ISO 800 and 1600,” he continued..
Plenty more analysis can be had, but it isn’t real clear that they see an overwhelming advantage over the SX10 IS.
Meanwhile, the Digital Camera Resource Page has posted their review of the SX1 IS:
The Canon PowerShot SX1 isn’t just a super zoom digital camera — it’s also a video camera capable of recording Full HD video. In the past, hybrid cameras have been just so-so, but the PowerShot SX1 takes good quality stills and very nice HD movies. Add in a rotating LCD, manual controls, snappy performance, and lots of point-and-shoot features, and you end up with a hybrid camera that’s done the right way.

…though that “right way” is loaded with caveats, like price, size, chromatic aberration, and other details more thoroughly explored here.
