Canon Powershot E1 Review: Odd But Capable

No it doesn’t look like the typical conservative stylings that your used to from Canon, but a Canon it is. The Powershot E1 is a 10 megapixel camera with a 4x zoom (35-140mm), 2.5 inch LCD, face detection, and even an optical viewfinder. Despite the powder-blue retro stylings, the E1 is basically a reskinned Powershot A1000. In a review at Digital Camera Review the E1 performs similarly to the A1000 (which is a pretty good budget camera), but it’s hard to get past that exterior:

Taking the E1 along for the ride over the Thanksgiving holiday, the camera managed to catch the eye of both my wife and my mother-in-law, who used words like “fun” and “trendy” to describe the device.

Even so, everyone who handled the camera – even those who didn’t mind its pastel palette and bulbous body – came away less than impressed by the E1. Arguably garish styling aside, the build quality just isn’t up to par for Canon; the E1 feels more like one of the budget A-series PowerShots of a few years ago, with lots of plastic and a cheap-looking high-gloss finish. The camera is solid enough, and the buttons and other controls feel alright, but stacked up against the new PowerShot A models, the E1’s build just isn’t quite there.

I suppose mentioning that the A1000 is a much better value is beside the point, so I won’t mention it.
