Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi (450D) Review
To me the Rebel XSi is the best entry-level camera there is right now, with the added distinction of the silliest name in the class (just call it the 450D–so much better). It boasts 12 megapixels, and the big 3 inch LCD, and a host of other features worthy of a more pro-sumery type camera (ala the EOS 40D). It’s so good and so affordable, that I really don’t see the point of the Rebel XS. Just think:
- 12 megapixel sensor, the 40D has 10.
- 14 bit raw
- ISO 100-1600
- 3.5 FPS
- 9 pt AF
- 3 inch LCD (230k)
- Sensor cleaning
- Live View
That’s not bad for $638.95! with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens. It’s the best deal going for a DSLR. And in his review, Bob Atkins makes a pretty good case for the 450D:
there’s no denying that in terms of performance per dollar, the Digital Rebel XSi may be the best bang for the buck for someone who just wants a camera that gives high quality images under most shooting conditions.
Forget the Rebel XS/ 1000D, get the 450D, available at Amazon for only $638.95 with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens. Ridiculously cheap.

Hokey sheet, you’ve been busy this week!
Re the Nikon history video: Nice. But not always truthful, Nikon did not have the first SLR with built-in winder, Konica did, years earlier, the FS-1 in 1979.
… Oops, I’m so embarrassed: it was an *AF* motor, not a film motor, on the Nikon.
Never mind, nothing to see here!…
Yes, I’m back to my normal routine—–there were some, uh, elections here—and I got a little wrapped up in it.
From what I hear, you weren’t alone.
