Canon EOS 7D Video Quality Impresses
Filmmaker Philip Bloom has posted and discussed some preliminary results with the Canon EOS 7D. From the looks and sound of it, the results are largely on par with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, but of course the EOS 7D has distinct filmmaker advantages in adjustable framerates, for instance the 7D shoots at a more film-like 24fps, and in 720p the 7D can shoot at 50 fps, which can then be adjusted in post to 24p for in-camera slow motion.
For me the thing i love most about the camera is the different frame rates. I can shoot full HD 24p, 25p and of course 30p BUT really excitingly I can shoot 720p 50p and 60p which although when played back at normal speed locks horrible and video like to me it means you can easily tell your editing system to play it back at 24p or 25p or 30p and get a lovely in camera slow motion.

The downside to the 7D is the loss of wide-angle, or at least you won’t be able to go as wide as with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. Given the robustness of the 7D’s feature set though, I suspect many indie filmmakers will be willing to give up some of that wide-ness.

??? With the EF-S 10-22mm, you can go plenty wide. I just bought this lens last week and it’s amazing!
That’s wide, but still that’d be 10mm on the 5D2…(maybe that’s too wide?)
No, it’d be about 16mm on the 5D. The 14mm Canon is awesome on the full frame but it is a fixed focal length lens.
Where the full frame really shines is with the tilt-shifts.
