Canon EOS 7D Review at PDN Gear Guide

When I recently reviewed the Canon EOS 7D, I found it to be the APS-C DSLR that money could buy right now. In large part this is because I think the EOS 7D offers the most value, but in addition it also happens to be an inspired performer that takes great pictures. Now those pictures don’t compare to the EOS 5D Mark II, and I won’t be making the switch, but compared to the Nikon D300s, the EOS 7D is at least equal to it in IQ. Factor the ability to resize down to D300 file sizes, and the EOS 7D has an edge.

To the point though, PDN Gear Guide has reviewed the EOS 7D, and they spend a bit of time on the 7D’s IQ. It reminds me to remind you, that the EOS 7D isn’t a pro-level camera, though it does offer a good degree of pro-level performance. If you’re used to full-frame DSLRs, you aren’t going to want an EOS 7D. If you’re an amateur or semi-pro photographer, you are going to want one. From their review:

There are other solutions to noise issues than increasing the price or making it a full-frame camera. Canon’s addressed some of them by giving the 7D dual Digic 4 processors but I’d have been more impressed if they kept the resolution at 15 megapixels or lower. Seriously, how many field photographers do you know who complain that their digital SLR doesn’t have enough resolution?

Even as an admirer of the camera, I have to agree with this, it would have been a better camera at 15 mp, but it’s also likely that it would been less well received. Then again, the G11 and S90 are doing fine, and they bumped down the resolution…
