Canon EOS 5D Mark II vs Nikon D700: Canon So Much Better.
No, no, I’m just kidding. But Gizmodo isn’t kidding in their comparison of the two full frame monsters the winner after a hard fought battle over interface, ISO, image quality, and features, is the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. The reason you ask? HD video. That’s right the Canon 5D Mark II is a better camera than an otherwise equal camera due to video. Maybe next time Nikon.
By the way for a specification comparison of the two cameras check out our post right here. 103 comments and counting. Really, that post could be its own blog.

I think they are too different. The Canon has the edge in resolution and video, the Nikon has the edge in speed, handling, and low-light performance.
While the extra resolution could be cool, I humbly submit that an edge in video isn’t an edge. That’s like picking a cell phone for having a better catalytic converter.
I of course, was being sarcastic, despite my obvious bias to the 5D2.
That is to say, I wish video wasn’t factored into the reviews of any of the cameras, though it is relative to mention it in the “value” of any particular camera.
I totally agree about video being left out of a “camera” review as to deciding which one is better. According to the majority of reviews I have read, and I have read many, the D700 outperforms the 5d Markii in about every test. But then there are always brand preferences. When it comes down to where the rubber meets the road, are the differences huge or miniscule? If huge, then I would be swayed. If miniscule, it just becomes a matter of brand preference.
Tom,
I think it really comes down to speed and AF vs. resolution. Really depends on which of these you need the most…
For me it was resolution… so I went with the 5D2.
