Canon EOS 5D Mark II vs Nikon D700: Canon So Much Better.
No, no, I’m just kidding. But Gizmodo isn’t kidding in their comparison of the two full frame monsters the winner after a hard fought battle over interface, ISO, image quality, and features, is the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. The reason you ask? HD video. That’s right the Canon 5D Mark II is a better camera than an otherwise equal camera due to video. Maybe next time Nikon.
By the way for a specification comparison of the two cameras check out our post right here. 103 comments and counting. Really, that post could be its own blog.

I think they are too different. The Canon has the edge in resolution and video, the Nikon has the edge in speed, handling, and low-light performance.
While the extra resolution could be cool, I humbly submit that an edge in video isn’t an edge. That’s like picking a cell phone for having a better catalytic converter.
I of course, was being sarcastic, despite my obvious bias to the 5D2.
That is to say, I wish video wasn’t factored into the reviews of any of the cameras, though it is relative to mention it in the “value” of any particular camera.
I totally agree about video being left out of a “camera” review as to deciding which one is better. According to the majority of reviews I have read, and I have read many, the D700 outperforms the 5d Markii in about every test. But then there are always brand preferences. When it comes down to where the rubber meets the road, are the differences huge or miniscule? If huge, then I would be swayed. If miniscule, it just becomes a matter of brand preference.
Tom,
I think it really comes down to speed and AF vs. resolution. Really depends on which of these you need the most…
For me it was resolution… so I went with the 5D2.
@Patrick
Your title (Canon “so much” better) doesn’t match your responses to comments. Clearly you have a subjective leaning to favor the 5D M2. I see no problem with this, given that you admit it.
I tried SLRs a lot but never bought one. I work in advertising and use agencies’ cameras.
Based on forum previews, samples proofs posted by experts, pros’ opinions from within the industry and friends’ advices, I believe the D700 has got an edge over the D5 M2 if the user is serious about fine image quality.
In low lighting, the D700 is no doubt the winner. Even in normal lighting, I have seen plenty of pros posting comparisons that show D700’s excellence in noise reduction, better detailing and tack-sharp quality.
Still, the D700 is the one that has a built-in flash, thought it is the least to need it.
Nevertheless, I didn’t decide which one to buy yet. I am hearing that Nikon lenses are much more expensive and scope of upgrade is much narrower than Canon lenses. Would this compensate the lower quality Canon produces? I do not know yet.
Cheers
Leeo,
First “so much better” was not meant to be taken seriously, I have the 5D2, and have access to the D700, I mostly prefer the 5D2, but…the D700 does have its uses, like sports, etc. I really don’t think the D700 has any serious edge over the 5D2, at least printed on paper the 2 look very close at the same size to me, I like the 5D2 for the bigger files, and the ability to crop if needed. The D700 always feels better when I pick it up, and the AF is just brilliant. My work typically doesn’t need the AF so much, so I’m happy to have the resolution AND low light abilities, all in a weatherproof package that shoots some pretty nice video. The camera’s getting to be a bit old school now, but I don’t frequently find cameras coming in that look much better than what I’m getting, not bad in my opinion.
