Canon EOS 5D Mark II: The Good, the Bad. Sony A900 Image Samples

Canon EOS 5D Mark II Image Samples: ISO up to 6400 Impressive, Printable

Put down the coffee, and head over to DPR now, as they’ve just put up a gallery with plenty of samples from a pre-production Canon EOS 5D Mark II. Everything looks as good as you could hope, but I’m surprised at just how good the high ISO shots look. Not only is ISO 1600 totally usable (and it is, absolutely nothing wrong with it), but ISO 3200 also looks amazing, and incredibly ISO 6400 also looks good with excellent noise management, while keeping plenty of detail. After ISO 6400 it quickly goes downhill, with the banding that seems to be produced on the newer Canons at high ISO.

After DPR, you’ll want to go straight to Damien Lovegrove’s blog and view his samples. Lovegrove was at Canon HQ with a supplied model and a pre-production 5D Mark II on launch day, and his samples confirm that yes, the new 5D is going to bring excellent image quality even at higher ISO. I mean just look at this ISO 6400 shot. There is noise there, but to my eye it’s a pretty pleasing grain pattern.

If the Nikon D700/D3 has an edge on ISO, it’s a small one (and doesn’t begin until ISO 6400). Very impressive.

You can order the Canon 5D Mark II now at:
Amazon (body only $2700 or with EF 24-105 L IS for $3500)
Adorama (body only $2699 or with EF 24-105 L IS for $3499)

  1. I agree, very impressive.

I know I’ve said it before, but: imagine what they could do with a 12MP full frame sensor now! Durn them for submitting to megapixel fever.

  2. I know, but they seem hell bent at going in that direction, witness the G10, I mean what advantage will those additional megapixels bring?
