Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR Camera: Review

Is the Canon EOS 5D Mark II too good to be true? That’s what I keep asking myself, because every first look or early impression that I’ve seen points to the new 5D being something very special, and as a Nikon fanboy I’m beginning to wonder am I really starting to drink the Kool-aid?

Then I saw Vincent Laforet’s movie using only the 5D Mark II’s video capabilities and it’s little discussed helicopter attachment. (Before we go any further, you must go to Laforet’s site now if you haven’t already done so.) The movie is simply amazing, and importantly, exhibits none of the “jellocam” that some might have been worried about.

And now I’ve read Bebb Studio’s review of the 5D MKII and yes I’m officially drinking the Kool-aid. By the gallon. The Bebbs (wedding photographer husband/wife team) love the ISO performance:

Aside from every other wonderful feature this camera offers, having the high ISO to work with already has me sold on it.  I push my current 5D to 3200 when conditions warrant, but I prefer not to go above 1600.  With the 5D MkII, I would have no problem at all regularly using ISO 6400 in reception settings.  In fact, we tried out ISO 12800 and 25600 (which I have dubbed ’supersonic’) and were very impressed with the results.  More on that in a moment.

The Bebbs go on lavishing quite a bit of praise on that new hi res LCD, and just about everything else about the 5D MKII, in addition to posting up some image samples, some at very high ISO, that are on par with what we’ve seen from the Nikon D700/D3 in the noise management dept.

Head on over and read their review here.
