Canon EOS 50D Digital SLR Camera Review

I know some folks were concerned when the specs for the Canon 50D and 5D Mark II were finally released, the conventional wisdom being that the big jump in megapixels would mean some compromises in image quality, specifically in the area that most photographers have developed a keen interest in, high ISO. But with a trickle of image samples coming in from both cameras it’s pretty clear that the advances Canon has made with its sensors and the implementation of DIGIC IV found on these new cameras, I think it is safe to say that Canon has more than successfully extinguished those concerns.

And to that point, I think Canon shooters, especially those anxious to upgrade will be very happy with Photography Blog’s review of the Canon 50D with raves like:

The EOS 50D is both a worthy upgrade for current 40D owners and a real challenger to the D300, mainly thanks to the larger 15 megapixel sensor, new Digic 4 processor and expanded ISO range, which thankfully haven’t compromised image quality in any way. Despite the 50% increase in resolution, the EOS 50D offers the best image quality of any Canon APS-C DSLR camera to date.

The question is will the feature set be compelling enough for 40D owners to move up (maybe not) and is it a serious competitor to the Nikon D300 (hard to measure). Weighing feature sets is always difficult, but one thing that can be taken off the table is image quality, the 50D will compete fine with the D300 there, and certainly is a step up from the 40D at the very least in terms of ISO performance.
