Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Review: Still a Classic, and Dirt Cheap
What’s fast, sharp, and suspiciously low priced? It’s the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM, and while it is very popular in part because at $350 the 85mm f/1.8 is very affordable, it also happens to be a very good lens. In a review at Photozone.de, the 85mm f/1.8 racks up high marks for itself, walking away with a highly recommended:
The Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM is a very desirable lens and, surprisingly, a very affordable one. Both contrast and resolution are very good straight from f/1.8 and excellent at medium aperture settings.

Looking at my lenses to purchase list, the 85mm f/1.8 is at number 4 with a question mark, of course this is in part because I’ve got the 100mm F/2.8 macro at number 3. The intent is double duty for portrait/macro, but I don’t know? 100mm, 85mm, or the 135mm f/2.0?

I keep bumping it – I think if I just stuck to my original list and just freaking bought the 70-200 f/2.8 IS much of my “need” would be satiated. Plus, I have the 100 f/2.8 and boy, you really need to shoot on the tripod with it to take full advantage.
JVL,
For sure the 70-200 f/2.8 IS covers some bases, and I have it at number 2 right now. First, as of today I want to get the 17-40 f/4, then the 70-200 f/2.8, then things get a bit less clear…
