Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM Lens Reviews

Getting covered as of late is the Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 II USM, which was introduced at Photokina and replaces the 11 year old previous version of the 24mm f/1.4. The newest version brings a whole host of improvements all soundly covered in 2 reviews, the first at Photoreview.com:

As a walk-around lens, the test lens was both a pleasure to use and surprisingly versatile for a prime lens. Despite its edge softness, it delivered outstanding results in very low light levels, where we were able to use shutter speeds as slow as 1/4 second with the EOS 5D. The wide aperture also provided a bright enough image to support manual focusing after dark. In bright conditions, flare and ghosting were negligible as long as the lens hood was kept in place.

Next up more coverage at SLRgear, where they note some major vignetting on full frames:

It’s a completely different story with the lens mounted on the full-frame 5D. The lens produces extremely dark corners when used with large apertures; at ƒ/1.4, the corners of the image are almost two stops darker than the center! This reduces to one stop by ƒ/2.8, and by ƒ/5.6 the differential hovers at 2/3 of a stop all the way through to ƒ/22.

The EF 24mm f/1.4 II USM is a great lens outside some vignetting and soft corners, if you can afford it (currently $1700…ouch!)
