Canon 1000D/Rebel XS Review: “Detuned XSi”

Our official recommendation at Neutralday remains: Entry level photographers should buy the 450D/Rebel XSi, not the 1000D/XSi. This is not to say that the first time DSLR shooter won’t get value from their purchase of the XSi, but the 450D gives you 2 more megapixel, larger viewfinder, 3″ LCD, spot metering, improved AF, and a nicer textured grip. These added benefits don’t come with a very significant price increase either, in fact the intrepid shopper might be able to pick up the better camera (the 450D/ Rebel XSi) for less, that’s right less money (I’ve seen it as low as $674). When this changes with discounts, our recommendation may change, but for now, get the 450D.

On that note Steve’s Digicams reviews the 1000D/Rebel XS and likes it quite a bit.Steve’s got qualms with the live view (Sony owns the implementation of live view right now) and the lack of a nice grip, but otherwise:

The Rebel XS has the ability to produce beautiful photos, right out of the box. The vast majority of our outdoor photos showed excellent exposure, nice image sharpness (using standard Picture Style), and pleasing color saturation. The included Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom is a great starter lens, offering about 3x magnification. While using this combo, I saw very little edge softness and only very moderate barrel distortion. I also found that there were no traces of purple fringing (aka Chromatic Aberrations) in any of our samples.
