At $700, the Tamron 70-200 ƒ/2.8 is bound to be at least somewhat inferior to its much more expensive counterparts from Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Pentax, but luckily, in a review at SLRgear.com, the majority of that compromise will come in build quality, and less so from the all important IQ:
Sharpness results meet and even [...]

Happy New Year: (and Poll Results!)

by Patrick on January 1, 2009

First, Happy New Year.
Second happy birthday to us, we’re now 1 year old here at Neutralday.com. (blowing out of candle…)
Third, the surprising poll results above. Yes, that is the Nikon D700 winning by a hair.
Finally, if you’re just sitting around today, you might want to think about:

Nikon D3x vs Nikon D3: Image Quality Comparison

by Patrick on January 1, 2009

How much of a real world difference does 24 megapixels make over 12 megapixels? For the curious, a somewhat extensive comparison has been done here at www.fotographie.fr.
A few things are pretty interesting. First the D3X obviously is bringing home the detail, but it is also doing at surprisingly high ISO. While they’ve run some noise [...]

Full Frame Shootout: Image Quality Comparison

by Patrick on December 29, 2008

While we’ve said this for awhile and commenters generally agree, any of the full frame cameras will serve you very well, delivering excellent performance and image quality. But if you’re still unconvinced, Luminous Landscape servers up an excellent comparison of the big 3; the Sony A900, the Canon 5D Mark II, and the Nikon D3x. [...]

doesn’t have Live View (and Reichmann misses it)
doesn’t match the 5D Mark II or D3x in ISO performance over 800.
doesn’t have the lens library that Canon or Nikon does.

but

it does have [...]

Sony Cybershot DSC-T77 Review: Fun to Shoot With

by Patrick on December 19, 2008

Certainly one of the best looking compacts, you’ll remember that the Sony Cybershot DSC-T77 features a 10 megapixel sensor, 4x zoom, and 3 inch touch screen. It is almost identical to the Sony Cybershot DSC-T700, minus the 4GB of internal storage, a smaller (though still large) LCD screen, and most significantly it costs about $100 [...]

Canon has issued the following statement regarding the black dot issue and banding problem:

To Owners of the EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR Camera
Thank you for using Canon products.
We have learned that some users of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR camera have identified two types of image quality phenomena that appear under [...]

by Patrick on December 19, 2008

Chromasia’s David Nightingale writes his tips for creating HDR images over at Photography Blog. If you’re unfamiliar, Nightingale’s Chromasia blog is one of the best, and certainly one of the most popular and yes he does some fine HDR work, so he’s a good one to take tips from.
The thing about HDR is that it’s [...]

Photographer Chris Nze

by Patrick on December 19, 2008

Photographer Chris Nze has an incredibly strong Flickr. The above is a look (palladium) that I find myself frequently trying to duplicate in Silver Efex. I just love it.
