Alienskin Software Announces Bokeh Plugin

Alienware has announced a new lens simulating plugin for Photoshop simply called Bokeh and to be released in December.

Bokeh can draw attention to your subject by manipulating focus and depth of field after the shot has been taken. From changing the depth of field to placing a radial sweet spot and adding a vignette, Bokeh provides many techniques for realistic blurring and altering the mood of a scene.

Bokeh is the only software that accurately simulates the distinctive blurring and creamy highlights of real lenses. Terence Tay, Bokeh’s designer, performed careful experiments with lenses famous for their bokeh highlights, such as the Canon® EF 85mm f/1.2 II and the Nikon® 105mm f/2.8 Macro. The result is a photo-realistic look, in contrast to the unnatural blur from other software.

I use Alienware’s Exposures plugin quite a bit, so I know they do good work over there. Check the site because they have a video demonstration of the plugin at work over there that seems pretty interesting.

  1. Thanks, this seems really useful.

I hope it will do bulk processing. On my commercial girly pic site (domai.com) I often have sets which really could do with some soft background.

  2. Did you try this software yet? I’m disappointed to learn that *I* have to carefully select the subject, it’s not automatic.

  3. No I haven’t tried it, but as you said, you do have to handle your selections (be nice to have built in masking). My issue from actually getting it was that it simulates bokeh on one plane (the background) instead of showing the full depth (less to more bokeh as the image goes back to the background). On the other hand it does look much, much, better to me than gaussian blur.

  4. Yeah, it really should be able to take it’s cue from the degree of existing bokeh, and just enhance it.

    • It does have a planar/focal selecting tool though in the interface right? But I guess it might be too “loose” for tight selections, i.e. models?

    • Also, OnOne has focal point, with a rough selecting device, but as I remember, Bokeh seems to produce better results.

  5. Yes, Alien Skin says you need to make a selection in photoshop first.
