Our deepest sympathies to David Ziser

I was sad to see that David Ziser posted that his mother had passed away this weekend. For those who may not know, David runs the Digital ProTalk blog, one of the blogs I’m sure to check on a daily basis for David’s insight, information, and photography. If you’d like to leave your thoughts and/or condolences you can do so here.

Sony announces 24.8 megapixel full frame sensor

sony sensor

Goodness

In a move that we would love to believe anticipates a PMA announcement of the much rumored, and highly anticipated A900, Sony has announced a 24.8 megapixel, full frame, 35mm sensor. A behemoth, in other words. Sony says that 12 bit RAW output could be done in the order of ohhh…6.3 fps, but no word on 14bit. Guess we can assume Nikon as a potential customer…Nikon D3x anyone?

Press Release after the jump…

Nikon D300 vs. Canon 40D

Good read at pophoto.com, which finds the two cameras more evenly matched than expected. But don’t let that fool you, unlike the fine people running 1001 noisy cameras, I won’t blink at giving away the conclusion of the review…Nikon D300 wins! Seriously though better camera, Nikon D300. Better camera for the money, Canon 40D.

Can I just mention that when I read about the D300’s (and D3 for that matter) AF system, I just want to head straight over to b and h photo plunk down the credit card and get one.

Sony A350, A300, on sonystyle.com (again, but different)

Sony A350

This is the A350, but play with the url and you can get A300 pics as well, but uhmmm… we really don’t see a bit of difference. Also, check out the image on the LCD, as there’s a little forum discussion on what may be happening with the live view’s AF system here.

Nikon D60 is announced

Nikon D60

It’s official

Nikon announced the D60 which should be available sometime in March, although no pricing information is available at this time. Nikon has kept the 10.2 megapixel sensor found in the D40x, as well as the 2.5″ LCD and external shape, albeit with some tweaks here and there. Instead Nikon has focused on adding other nice features that should help the D60 stay competitive (unless consumers are swayed by the megapixel war that appears to be brewing in the entry level cameras) These features include a double system of reducing dust on the sensor, one of which uses internal camera airflow to keep dust away from the sensor during camera use, and of course the D60 features live view as is now standard it seems. One of the big reasons a lot of people liked the D40/D40x ,with some even using it as a second camera body, was its small size…well the D60 weighs in at just 16oz! (he’s just a little guy).

The D60 will kit with the recently announced AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR lens which makes for nice entry level package. Press release after the jump.

Also, DPR has the trademark hands on preview of the Nikon D60 here.

Sony A350 and A300: First Look

Sony A350

Sony A300

Sony A300

Here’s a look from the sony style site that would seem to show a 14.2 megapixel A350 with swivel LCD and a 10.2 A300 also with the swivel LCD. Courtesy beline at dyxum.com

Update: It’s hard to figure out the marketing strategy here on Sony’s part. These look to be identical camera bodies, with the only difference we know of being the sensors. Then the sensors themselves are a bit of a curiosity..

same sensor, different crop factor or…
cmos and ccd?
something else?

Just weird. Also for those anticipating the Nikon D90, any chance that 14.2 megapixel sensor gets dropped in there (that whole Nikon/Sony relationship thing) and co-ops the Pentax K20D? Just something to think about, because it looks like the D60 might be sharing the 10.2 megapixel sensor.

Additional photos up in the forum.

Canon 450D: Hands on preview

Canon 450D

The brand-spanking new Canon 450D gets the hands on preview treatment at Popphoto.com. With a slew of added features, spot metering, big 3 inch LCD, and live view, and the boost to 12 megapixels, I can’t imagine how Canon won’t be able to be even more successful in the entry-level camera market.

Naturally with the impressive feature set, Popphoto.com was impressed, especially with the live view, which like the megapixels, trumps the Canon 40D…more after the jump.
